Integrated frontend libraries and third-party licenses

Get to know the integrated CSS and JavaScript libraries of the bluetronix standard version. Learn about the documented third-party licenses, how to keep standard files updatable, and what license checks are required before proprietary delivery.

Objective of the Tutorial

This documentation is aimed at developers and explains the integrated frontend libraries of the bluetronix standard version, their storage locations, and the documented third-party licenses in the template.

Important: Before delivering a version, the actual files included, their original license notices, and any existing commercial license proofs must be checked. The version specifications listed here come from this documentation template.

The bluetronix CMS includes various external frontend libraries for layout, JavaScript functions, sliders, galleries, and animations in the standard version.

These components are referred to as integrated frontend libraries and should be distinguished from the actual bluetronix CMS modules like Blog, Shop, Search, or Login.

The corresponding standard files are located, depending on the file type, within the system directories:

/bx_style/
/bx_script/

Important: The directories bx_style and bx_script belong to the bluetronix system. The standard files contained within may be replaced or overwritten by updated versions in a bluetronix CMS update.

Changes should not be made directly within these standard files.

For individual customizations, own files or appropriately marked _own files should be used.

Included frontend libraries

Library Version License Usage
Bootstrap CSS 5.3.3 MIT Responsive layouts and CSS components
jQuery 3.7.1 MIT JavaScript and DOM functions
Owl Carousel 2.3.4 MIT Sliders and Carousels
Swiper 8.4.6 MIT Touch sliders and responsive carousels
WOW.js 1.2.1 MIT Scroll and reveal animations
LightGallery 1.6.2 GPLv3 / Commercial License Image and video galleries / Lightbox

Bootstrap 5.3.3 CSS

Bootstrap provides the responsive CSS framework for the bluetronix standard version.

Used:

Bootstrap 5.3.3 CSS

Note: The JavaScript version of Bootstrap (bootstrap.js) is not part of the bluetronix standard version.

Bootstrap offers the following CSS features, among others:

  • Grid-System
  • responsive Breakpoints
  • Container
  • Spacing-Klassen
  • Typografie
  • Buttons
  • Formular-Styles
  • Utility-Klassen

License: MIT License

The Bootstrap code can be used, modified, and distributed within commercial and proprietary projects, provided the MIT license is adhered to.

Copyright and license notices must remain in copies or substantial parts of the software.

jQuery 3.7.1

jQuery is used for various JavaScript and DOM functions within the bluetronix CMS.

Used version:

jQuery 3.7.1

License: MIT License

jQuery can also be used and distributed within commercial and proprietary projects under the MIT license.

The existing copyright and license notice should remain within the delivered jQuery file.

Owl Carousel is used for slider and carousel displays.

Used version:

Owl Carousel 2.3.4

License: MIT License

Owl Carousel may also be used in commercial and proprietary projects under the MIT license.

Note: The official Owl Carousel 2 project is no longer actively developed. The MIT license of the used version 2.3.4 remains unaffected.

Swiper 8.4.6

Swiper is a touch and slider library for responsive websites.

Used version:

Swiper 8.4.6

Swiper can be used for functions such as:

  • Bild-Slider
  • Content-Slider
  • Touch-Gesten
  • mobile Carousels
  • responsive Slider

License: MIT License

The used Swiper version can be used and distributed within commercial and proprietary projects under the MIT license.

WOW.js 1.2.1

WOW.js is used to reveal elements while scrolling a webpage or to trigger CSS animations.

Used version:

WOW.js 1.2.1

The version used in bluetronix contains the following license notice:

WOW wow.js - v1.2.1
Copyright (c) 2016 Thomas Grainger
Licensed MIT

License: MIT License

Important: For bluetronix, the MIT-licensed variant of WOW.js maintained by Thomas Grainger is used.

This version can also be used within commercial and proprietary projects under the MIT license.

LightGallery 1.6.2

License check: The inclusion of LightGallery in this overview does not imply that a Commercial License for the specific bluetronix distribution is already in place. Before proprietary distribution, the legal basis of the actually used version must be clarified and documented.

LightGallery is used within the system for image and video galleries, as well as lightbox displays.

Used version:

LightGallery 1.6.2
2017-10-03

The used file contains the following license notice:

Lightgallery
Author: Sachin N
License: GPLv3
Version: 1.6.2 - 2017-10-03

License: GNU General Public License Version 3 (GPLv3)

Important: LightGallery has different licensing terms than the other MIT libraries listed here.

The LightGallery project distinguishes between:

Open-Source-Nutzung
→ GPLv3

Proprietäre / kommerzielle Anwendung
→ Commercial License

For use within a proprietary bluetronix distribution, a valid commercial LightGallery license should therefore be available.

Alternatively, the use must be fully compliant with the terms of the GPLv3.

Recommendation: If bluetronix is delivered to customers in a proprietary manner, LightGallery should either be used under an appropriate Commercial License or replaced with a library that has a license suitable for proprietary distribution.

Storage locations

The library files are stored in the bluetronix system folders depending on their file type.

File Type Directory
CSS /bx_style/
JavaScript /bx_script/

Libraries like Owl Carousel, Swiper, or LightGallery can have both CSS and JavaScript files and therefore be present in both system areas.

Updates

The standard files within the:

/bx_style/
/bx_script/

are managed by the bluetronix update system.

During a CMS update, these files may be replaced with newer versions provided by bluetronix.

This can include updates such as the following:

  • Sicherheitsupdates
  • Fehlerkorrekturen
  • Browser-Kompatibilitätsanpassungen
  • neue Bibliotheksversionen

Important: When updating a third-party library, it must also be checked whether its licensing terms have changed.

Do not modify standard files directly

The standard files delivered by bluetronix should not be modified directly.

Direct modifications may be overwritten during a future system update.

For individual extensions, the following applies:

Standarddatei
→ unverändert lassen

Eigene Erweiterung
→ eigene Datei oder _own-Datei verwenden

Receive license notes

The existing copyright and licensing notices within the third-party files should not be removed.

For example:

/*!
 * Bootstrap ...
 * Licensed under MIT
 */

or:

/*! jQuery ...
 * OpenJS Foundation ...
 */

should remain within the delivered files.

Third-party licenses

Additionally, it is advisable to provide a central overview of all third-party libraries used within the bluetronix distribution.

For example:

THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt

This file should contain at least the following information:

  • Name der Bibliothek
  • verwendete Version
  • Urheber bzw. Projekt
  • Lizenz
  • Verweis auf die jeweilige Lizenz

Recommended content of the third-party licenses file

Bootstrap 5.3.3

License check during updates

Since the frontend libraries can be updated via the bluetronix update system, a check should be made before including a new version:

1. Welche Version wird ausgeliefert?

2. Welche Lizenz verwendet diese Version?

Only then should a new version be adopted as the standard library in bx_style or bx_script.

Summary

The bluetronix standard version includes the following external frontend libraries:

Bootstrap CSS 5.3.3
jQuery 3.7.1
Owl Carousel 2.3.4
Swiper 8.4.6
WOW.js 1.2.1
LightGallery 1.6.2

Bootstrap, jQuery, Owl Carousel, Swiper, and the used version of WOW.js are under the MIT License.

The respective copyright and license notices must be retained.

LightGallery 1.6.2, on the other hand, is under GPLv3 or can be licensed through a Commercial License for proprietary applications.

Therefore, the following should apply for a proprietary bluetronix distribution:

Bootstrap
jQuery
Owl Carousel
Swiper
WOW.js
→ MIT-Lizenzbedingungen einhalten

LightGallery
→ gültige Commercial License verwenden
oder durch eine entsprechend lizenzierte Alternative ersetzen

With every future update of a third-party library, the version and license must be checked again before the new version is delivered via the bluetronix update system.

FAQ

what customers often ask us

What are integrated frontend libraries?

These are external CSS and JavaScript libraries used in the bluetronix standard version for layouts, sliders, galleries, and animations. They are not standalone CMS modules like Blog or Shop.

Which frontend libraries does this documentation mention?

The template mentions Bootstrap CSS 5.3.3, jQuery 3.7.1, Owl Carousel 2.3.4, Swiper 8.4.6, WOW.js 1.2.1, and LightGallery 1.6.2. Before delivery, you should match the installed versions with the actual files.

Is Bootstrap JavaScript included in the bluetronix standard system?

No. According to the template, Bootstrap 5.3.3 is used exclusively as CSS; bootstrap.js is not part of the standard version.

Where are the included CSS and JavaScript files located by default?

CSS files are located under /bx_style/ and JavaScript files under /bx_script/. Libraries may have files in both directories.

May I modify system files directly?

Standard files in bx_style and bx_script may be overwritten during updates. Use separate project files or appropriately marked _own files for your extensions.

Which of the listed libraries use the MIT License?

The template mentions Bootstrap CSS, jQuery, Owl Carousel, Swiper, and the version of WOW.js maintained by Thomas Grainger. Check the license notices in the actual delivered files.

What special feature applies to LightGallery 1.6.2?

The documented version uses GPLv3 or a Commercial License. For a proprietary distribution, it must be checked before delivery whether a suitable commercial license is available or the specific use is fully GPLv3 compliant.

Is commercial use possible with the MIT License?

Yes, if the conditions of the MIT License are met. This particularly includes retaining the prescribed copyright and license notices in copies or significant parts.

How do I document third-party licenses?

The template recommends a central file THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt. It should contain the name, version, author or project, license, and a reference to the corresponding license text.

What should I check when updating a library?

Check the actual delivered version, its license text, compatibility with the intended distribution, and the obligation to pass on license or copyright notices. Clarify whether a separate commercial license is needed.

Will custom _own files be retained during system updates?

The _own convention is used to separate custom files from standard files. This protects individual changes from being updated like regular system files; however, maintaining and adopting relevant security updates remains the developer's responsibility.

Are third-party libraries the same as CMS modules?

No. Frontend libraries provide CSS layouts, sliders, or gallery functions, for example. CMS modules like blog, shop, search, and login are separate application functions of the bluetronix CMS.
